Dr Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) the founder of Homoeopathy was a Medical Doctor born in Germany. Unhappy with the medical practices of his time, he gave up medical practice and as an expert in languages took up translation for his living. A lightning struck on him, while translating Cullen’s material medica, which attributed the ague curing properties of Cinchona bark to its bitterness. If bitterness of Cinchona bark could cure ague, why not other bitter things. He experimented on other bitter substances and finally found, it was not the bitterness but the ability of cinchona to produce symptoms similar to Ague. This led him to the famous discovery Like cures like( Similia similibus curentur) and thus Homoeopathy was born.
